Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selma Alispahić

Selma Alispahić is one of the foremost theater and film actresses in Southeastern Europe. She is a permanent member of the Sarajevo War Theatre (SARTR) since 1998. She lived in London and performed at the Royal National Theatre, Complicite Theatre, Young Vic Theatre, BBC Radio etc. She worked with actors like James Fox, Jane Birkin, Rosemary Harris, Juliet Stevenson and famous directors such as Simon McBurney, Tim Supple, Paul Yule, Annie Castledine etc. After returning to Bosnia and Herzegovina her extensive work in theatre includes leading roles at the National Theatre Sarajevo, National Theatre Tuzla, Chamber Theatre 55 Sarajevo and Theatre Sartr (Ay Carmela, Anna Karenina, Sylvia Plath, Katarina Kosaca – The Last Bosnian Queen,Caroline Neuber, Hasanaginica...etc.) Her film and television work includes: Milky Way (BIH), Elgar´s Tenth Muse (UK), A Stranger (HR), Selam (TR), Broken Mussels (TR), Secrets from the Past (TR). She has received numerous Best Actress Awards at festivals in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. She is also a recipient of the ‘Woman of the Year” Award and the “Freedom” Award from the International Center for Peace Sarajevo for her contribution to humanism, fight for human rights and freedom in BiH, Europe and the world. Ms. Alispahic worked for eight years as Associate Professor of Acting at the Academies of Drama in Tuzla and  Mostar. She completed postgraduate studies from the Department of Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. In 2010 she defended her MA thesis and in 2015 she defended her PhD thesis on “Confessional Poetry of Ted Hughes” and became a PhD in literary history sciences.
